The Battle of Spotslvania
In the Spring of 1864, General Grant was helping General Meade run the Army of the Potomac. After the Battle of the Wilderness, Grant tried to outflank Lee, but Lee's men stopped him at the town of Spotsylvania Courthouse. Normally, the armies would stop after a large battle and recover, Grant did not like that idea at all. He decided to attack Lee's men even though everyone was tired. He hoped to arrive before the confederates had time to build defensis. Then Union arrived just over an hour after the confederates. The battle lasted over two weeks from May 7 to May 20. A place in the battle known as "bloody angle" was assulted several times by the Union forces on May 12 during a major assult. There is a picture of it above this paragraph. The battle ended when the confederates retreated southward. The confederate losses were a terrible blow to Lee's army.
